A 'NEW' (?) BOOK BY TONY

Bill deMello brought out 'Anthony deMello SJ, The Happy Wanderer - A Tribute to My Brother' (edited by Clifford W. DeSilva)  to commemorate 25 years since the passing of Tony. The much-awaited biography serves a need for the legions who want to know more about Tony. A review of this book by Fr. Alban D'Souza SJ is presented elsewhere in this blog.
In America Image Books have thought to commemorate 25 years by bringing out a 'new' book by Tony: Rediscovering Life - Awaken to Reality. This is a transcription of the old 1984 satellite conference by Tony which was recorded and had come out in cassette form under the title: 'A Rediscovery of Life'. What one sees is not a faithful transcription. Someone has 'edited' as well as added material in a lame attempt to sound like Tony at times. This is especially seen in the opening lines of the book.
It is my belief that those who have read and/or heard Tony's Awareness and other books will not find anything new in this  'latest' book by Tony. This book is probably aimed at a new generation of new readers. It is hoped that it will do what it set out to do.

BOOK REVIEW OF 'THE HAPPY WANDERER'

By Alban D’Souza SJ

(Anthony deMello SJ, The Happy Wanderer by Bill deMello, Edited by Clifford DeSilva.  Hardbound. 344 pages. 14 pages of photographs. Rs. 240/ $12. GSP, Anand. Available at all Pauline Bookstores.)

Bill deMello's biography of his brother, Tony deMello, acknowledged by many as the Guru of Change and personal care, has appeal for two main reasons. One, it gives the interested reader glimpses of Tony as a youngster in a family situation. This lets us in on Tony's 'hidden years' as it were. Already here we see Tony focused and exceptional in many ways.
Secondly, we are treated to interesting insights of Tony's progressive spiritual growth and the various turns that Tony took and new and varied learnings he allowed himself to experiment with.  The thoughts and ideas he explored, worked on and made part not just of his own personal journeying but as means and ways for others to grow as well are graphically described. Bill, as he admits, initially little understood or really cared for this creative spiritual dimension of his brother.
Bill's growing astonishment and gradual grasp of the wonders of Tony's influence and contributions help the reader to understand Tony in a much better way.  The many and diverse collections of information from all over the world that Bill requested for and received makes for wonderful reading. This information shared with Bill gives a very personal understanding of Tony. Bill has been extremely objective in as much as he does include observations of Tony which express criticism of him.
Another notable aspect of the book is the contextualization of Tony’s impact and striking changes that he brought about among religious and lay people. This well written and insightful elucidation of Tony’s Jesuit formative years is clearly explained by the Editor, Clifford DeSilva who was very close to Tony. In the book, Bill acknowledges Clifford’s contribution with gratitude.  The precision of the editing helps the reader understand much of the background of developments as Tony entered into different areas of reflection and practice, a few of which invited controversy.
This book is a presentation of Tony in all his humanness as well as offers insightful glimpses in the way that Tony grew and evolved over the years on his way to being fully human and fully alive. The impact that Tony made too is brought out clearly in the views expressed by many and the continuing appeal of Tony's publications. Bill, through this biography, continues to 'create people' the way Tony did in his life time.

Brain Magic™
Brain Magic™ is a relatively new system which demonstrates that change can be brought about FAST; exploding the myth that change is a slow and painful process that takes years.
Brain Magic™ succeeds because it works with the process and structure (form) rather than the content of our problems.  It studies the way the brain works, the processes it undergoes and, based on this, teaches us ways to use these processes in our favour. In other words, it teaches us how to program (or re-program) the brain. We call this Brain Magic™ because quite simply, magic is what it is!

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy
Developed by Dr. Albert Ellis PhD, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) works on the principle that our emotions are caused by the way we think.
Faulty or distorted thinking causes emotions that are damaging to the person and lowers their self-esteem. These emotions need not have been experienced in the first place. The ADMI  courses in RET show you how to get rid of distorted thinking and lead a richer, healthier and happier life through new ways of handling problems at work or in your personal life. Further, the course also teaches you how to help others.

Transactional Analysis (TA)
TA is an ingenious development by Dr. Eric Berne MD who popularized his work through bestsellers such as Games People Play. TA is a simplified version of Freud’s Id, Ego and Superego concepts. It believes that we operate out of three different ego states and solutions to our emotional and social interaction problems can be found after analysing the social transactions that we make.
The ADMI courses in TA are designed for those who have no prior knowledge of TA. Coupled with Gestalt Therapy, TA has vast applications in all spheres of life.

Person Centred Therapy - FIAMC Bio-Medical Ethics Centre, Goregaon
Person-Centred Therapy (PCT)
Belonging to the humanistic school, this form of therapy is the brainchild of Dr. Carl Rogers MD. PCT was basically a reaction to the Psychoanalytic Theory of Sigmund Freud.  Rogers believed that a person is the best expert in their own life and is capable of finding their own solutions, provided they are given a sense of worth and are brought up in the special atmosphere created by the therapist. The ADMI course teaches you to master this form of therapy. It is ideal for teachers, doctors and others who are in/wish to get into the helping profession.

What is Gestalt Therapy (GT)
Gestalt Therapy was developed by Dr. Fritz Perls MD, a Viennese psychiatrist who believed that a person could become whole by living in the present, by “losing one’s mind and coming to one’s senses”. He lays much stress on awareness of what is going on in the “here-and-now”. Gestalt Therapy is generally coupled with TA for applications in various areas of life.

Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is perhaps the most misunderstood phenomenon in psychotherapy and human resource development.
Hypnosis is a very serious and effective form of therapy. It may be remembered that Freud himself worked with hypnosis in the beginning of his career and then realised the tremendous power of the unconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy harnesses the power of the unconscious mind to bring about progressive and generic changes in one’s personal life.
The ADMI courses are based on the work of Milton Erikson who is considered the world’s greatest-ever hypnotherapist.

Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling & Vocational Guidance
This is a One-Year correspondence course with lessons sent by post / email. There would be 200 hours of contact classes, practicals, demonstrations and practice and 120 hours of internship. The course is meant for those who seriously wish to get into the helping profession. Covers six modules, namely, Person-Centred Therapy; Gestalt therapy; Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy; Transactional analysis; Neuro-Linguistic Programming; and Vocational Guidance & Psychometric Testing.

The Book Is Out

Bill deMello's bio of his brother entitled Anthony deMello SJ, The Happy Wanderer – A Tribute to My Brother, (and edited by Clifford W. DeSilva) was launched on 22nd April 2012 at a small function at St. Peter's Church Complex, Bandra, Mumbai, India.
Instead of the usual method of a ribbon being cut by some prominent person, Bill  chose to have the book 'launched' by Tony deMello himself.
Bill first welcomed the select gathering and thanked all who had labored to make the launch day a success and explained that the book was a tribute to his brother and was written with the view to promoting his books especially among the young. Bill then played a rare, unpublished recording of Tony celebrating Mass on his 50th Birthday. Relevant sections of this recording of Tony speaking and also singing while accompanying himself on the guitar were played.
Tony's own words explained the meaning of 'Happy Wanderer ' (the song) as a good example of sanyas. We are merely passing through this world so we need the minimum.
That was it. There were none of the usual speeches by 'eminent' persons and so on that accompany such occasions. Simplicity itself.
The book is published by Gujarat Sahitya Prakash, Anand who are the authentic publishers of all of Tony’s books in India (http://www.gspbooks.in/contactus.php).
You may also write to me if you want to avail of a special offer – a copy of the book which will include a free video of the launch (with Tony's entire speech at his 50th birthday mass). This will be Rs. 240/- ($10), postage and packaging extra. (This offer is valid as long as the stocks with me last.)

Pages: 314,  14 glossy pages of photographs.
Price: Rs. 240/$12. Postage and packaging extra.

Tony's brother, Bill had posted an e-bio of tony some years ago (see http://users.tpg.com.au/adsligol/tony/). Since then he has received myriads of messages urging him to write a comprehensive bio of tony. This he has done at last and it is a work of love.

The book is called 'Anthony deMello SJ, The Happy Wanderer - a Tribute to my Brother.'

Having been associated with the book I can tell you that there are lovely anecdotes, little-known episodes about Tony and a lot on the internal working of the Society of Jesus.

But what is best is the inside look at Tony and what made him tick.
The book will be released on the evening of the 21 st of April 2012 at St. Peter's Church Hall, Bandra. Tony died on 1st June 1987 at Fordham University, New York. This year makes it 25 years since that happened.

Tony may have left this mortal but he lives on through his books and video/audio recordings.

Incidentally, in case you d
id not know, there is an "anthony demello group" on face book which you can join if you wish.

All the best
Clifford

About the Book

"This book fulfils the need for a comprehensive biography of Tony, a man who has been described at various times as the Laughing Saint, the Happy Wanderer, a prophet and a rare mystic. Little-known facts of his early life and family background that reveal Tony's spiritual evolution have been painstakingly recorded by his brother as a work of love."
